My First 30 Days Without Alcohol

Week 1 No Alcohol

The first day of no alcohol was the day I jumped right into the 30-day mindset program, where there is a new topic each day. After writing down all my reasons why I should stop drinking my wine, I reaffirmed to myself, “I can do this” I will feel so proud of myself if I get to day seven. I  got myself some Alcohol-free wine to help me along, as I was so used to having a wine glass plastered to my hand most of the time. I found this a very useful approach to fend off the cravings. I also found that taking a few deep breaths in and slowly exhaling worked wonders as well. I did this breathing exercise at any time of the day when needed. My sleep pattern was a bit disruptive this week, I guess due to abstaining from alcohol.

Week 2-3 No alcohol

I was beginning to have more energy throughout the day and feeling so pleased with myself for getting this far. I know some people can feel very lethargic during this period, but it certainly was the opposite for me. Going about my days, my work, my home life, I started to feel calm and clear-headed throughout the day, like the fog is starting to lift. But then the evenings arrive, and that wine o’clock state of mind would creep in. But there is no way I’m giving in. I would picture the cravings like clouds floating by and then disappearing.  I started eating meals at sensible times, which was new for me, as we know alcohol can disrupt many things in our lives.

Week 4 No Alcohol

As the days passed, I was becoming more proud of myself. It was recommended to me that I should join an online alcohol support group, which I did. These support groups are great for inspiration, motivation, and connection with like-minded people. My sleeping pattern is still a bit disrupted, but an improvement from week 1

What Was It Like To Reach Day 30

Honestly… what an amazing feeling; I was buzzing with pride. This was a huge milestone for me, and also a reflective time for me. It made me realise that when you change your mindset, anything can be possible. Yes, there can be highs and lows along the way, but I thought that to come this far, I’m not going back. The most amazing feeling throughout these 30 days with no alcohol is to wake up every day with no hangovers. I am almost 15 months alcohol-free, and I am still so grateful to wake up clear-headed.
